In an article published by Diário de Cuiabá, attorney Maria Paula Molinar, a partner at Candido Martins Cukier, discusses the growing use of dating agreements as a tool for estate and succession planning in Mato Grosso.

According to data from Anoreg/MT, 23 couples have already formalized this type of agreement at a notary office in the state. Across Brazil, the number of registrations jumped from 93 in 2022 to 241 in 2025, an increase of nearly 160%.

Maria Paula explains that this instrument is primarily sought by people who have previously been in other relationships, such as divorcees, as a form of protection against a potential “surprise heir.” She also emphasizes that the document is only valid if it reflects the reality of the relationship and there is no intention to establish a family.
